If you have appreciated shares of stock that you have owned for at least a year and a day, you can donate them to your church or another ministry through the Wisconsin United Methodist Foundation and avoid paying any commission or selling fee. You also receive a charitable income tax deduction and avoid declaring the capital gain of the assets as income. Your gift can be deducted up to 30% of your adjusted gross income. Larger gifts may qualify for a carry-forward of amounts in excess of the 30%. If you want your stock gift to count as a 2012 charitable deduction, please submit it by December 17th. Gifts may be made to the operating budget of your local church or to any specialized ministry.
